Pedaling Like A German

Did you know?

The first ever verified bicycle pedaled on the face of earth belongs to German Baron Karl von Drais, a civil servant to the Grand Duke of Baden in Germany. It was during the year 1817 when he created his Laufmaschine (a German word which means “running machine” in English). It was named Draisine (English) or draisienne (French) by the press and from then on, became popular as the very first two-wheeled tranportation. The word “bicycle” that we use now is coined in France in the 1860s. Several versions and enhancements came that even up to now, bicycles keep on improving and becoming customizable to suit for different markets.

One popular quote attributed to bikes is “Life is like a riding a bicylce. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” I’m pretty sure that no bike will balance that long unless it’s moving or has two tiny wheels at the back. Either way, a bike in the morning is a bliss and a good exercise. My brother and I, for once, woke up early that day. Without any school works to finish and due to the desire to have a change in our morning routines, we decided to hit off the river in our city, the Marikina City River. Well, it has a pretty bad reputation; a river known as dirty and smelly. But, hey, we did not go there for a swim! We went there to actually jog and do some exercise and… some fresh air (but what can we expect?)

We ran a few meters and it’s good to see fellow joggersーkids, adults, and even dogsーso energetic in the morning. And I have to admit, the view isn’t so bad. There are still many trees around and there were lesser trashes floating on the river, unlike how it was before. There were improvements in the park and I appreciated the scenery.

After reaching the middle part, we noticed the bike rental station. For only Php30.00, you can rent a bike for 30 minutes. Our parents won’t buy us bikes, but we do love riding them. This deal easily piqued our interest, so we quickly went the booth to inquire. Sadly, you have to have an ID or verification card to rent one to avoid theft because it seems that there are some who brings home their bikes. We didn’t have any ID that time, but the lady got kind enough to lend us bikes. She said that we look trustworthy enough. And I don’t think it’s a lie (we brought back our rented bikes to her 🤗)

Truth be told, cars may be convenient and faster, but bikes are more fun to drive. Technology will always bring something new, but let’s never forget the basics. They will always be part of us, will aways have a place in our hearts. It’s not how fast you got towards your destination,it’s  how you enjoyed the journey. And maybe, one good way to enjoy it is to pedal your way over. After all, you can’t appreciated the sceneries well if you’re going too fast ahead.
